WHO ARE WE?

We are a passionate group of Philocalists (lovers of beauty) with a particular passion for the beautiful coastline of KZN.  The Philocaly Trail (‘Philocaly’ meaning The Love of Beauty) is a KZN Beach walk intended to bring people together to share and enjoy the natural beauty of our coastline whilst donating funds to ocean conservation charities.

As avid beachgoers and beach walkers, in 2019 we arranged a 7 day staged beach walk from Durban to Mtunzini along the beaches.  Besides enjoying our spectacular coastline, participants donated a daily amount towards ocean conservation charities that operate in Durban.

In 2020, we had to postpone the Trail due to Covid restrictions and when we eventually went ahead in September, we reduced it to a 5-day Trail from Mtunzini to Sheffield. This route proved popular with participants and we had a good number of walkers joining us for one or more of the days. Due to popular demand, we held another 2-day weekend Trail in November from Tinley Manor to Umdloti.

The 2021 Trail followed the same route as the 5-day 2020 route and we had a record number of entries! The community of Mtunzini have been fantastic in their support of the Trail and turned out in their numbers to welcome visitors to their special part of the Northern Coast of KZN. We were restricted to a maximum of 100 participants on the final 3 days of the Trail due to restrictions on outdoor gatherings and were fortunate to complete the 2021 Trail before upgraded Covid restrictions were enforced on 27 June this year.

Following the continued success of The Philocaly Trails, we will be running a 2-day Philocaly Weekend Walk on 23 and 24 of October this year from the Beachwood Mangroves in Durban to Salmon Bay in Ballito.  (All Covid safety protocols will be followed.)

Visit our Image Galleries for photographs of our most recent event, the 5-day walk from Mtunzini to Sheffield beach. Our grateful thanks to all participants for sharing their photos with us.

In stark contrast to the backdrop of natural beauty, participants see first-hand the destruction and damage being caused by plastic and other pollution along our coastline.
We continue to arrange further beach walks to raise awareness of the need to appreciate, preserve and protect our natural marine and coastal heritage.

Our 2021 Sponsors

Thank you to Georgie and Simon Carter for coming on board as our Sponsors for the 2 day Philocaly Trail in October. Total Gateway is our proud Title Sponsor. Thank you for supporting the Trail in all that you do for us.

A huge thank you to Ann Denysschen and Errol Johnson of Plessie Telecommunications for donating a thermometer to the Philocaly Trail.
During these times it is essential to have one for an event and it has been so appreciated.

A huge shout out and THANK YOU to Gary Alport of SURF SIDE MOTORS, UMDLOTI for your kind donation to this year’s admin costs and set up of the Trail. Surfside has been a long time corporate sponsor in Umdloti for dune rehabilitation and marine conservancy along it’s beaches.
