More about our beneficiaries and the work they do
Founded by Sarah Ferguson, a physiotherapist in private practice, a motivational speaker, Pilates instructor, retired National Swimmer and swim coach.
Sarah is passionate about the ocean and works tirelessly to safeguard it for future generations to enjoy and appreciate responsibly.
In 2011 Sarah took part in her first ocean race in Hawaii and it was here that she found her passion for open water swimming and made the decision to do something meaningful with her swimming talents. Since 2012 she has been competing in and pioneering ocean swims in and around South Africa and abroad to help raise awareness of single-use plastic pollution.
Breathe Ocean Conservation aims to eliminate throwaway plastic. Breathe has already partnered with ‘A Plastic Ocean’ and is the first organisation to screen the plastic ocean documentary in South Africa. Breathe has worked with ‘I am Water’, ‘Four Elements Conservation’ and The Domino Foundation in organising various projects promoting beach cleanups and ocean education. “Live Deeply, Tread Lightly”
Facilitating partnerships between corporate, government and community role players for the benefit of our waterways in South Africa
We work with local communities, for the environment, with caring corporates and engage all stakeholders in an effort to find sustainable solutions to a complex, multi-faceted water crisis.
We focus on community-based solutions to the myriad of river health issues we face, keeping in mind that each river, each stretch, each community is different.
Everything is multi-dimensional and there are layers that need to be unpacked to understand how to fix a system first and networking and forging relationships with key stakeholders is crucial for sustainability.
We primarily focus on the grassroots level as a first approach, so working from the bottom up, and empowering communities to think critically and hold authorities to account for the state of their environment.
Our ultimate goal is to improve the health of the environment and in doing so, the health of the people who depend on it.
